Variable Helix

Please click on the images for a more detailed view.

"Variable Helix" is made of cast bronze. A "helix" in gear terminology refers to the angle of the gear tooth to axis or direction of the path of movement, which in this case, wanders from left-hand to right-hand from bottom to top, finishing with a "double helical", or "herringbone gear" at the end. The herringbone gear, having no gap where the teeth meet, was popular in old industry and difficult to produce.  This is the fifth and last of my limited edition of this sculpture.
